This workshop is for professionals only

Speech sounds are the building blocks of words. When a child’s speech is difficult to understand, it can affect how easily they can take part in conversations, share ideas, and engage in learning.

Supporting speech development can help children to communicate more confidently and successfully. A key focus of the workshop is how adults can adapt their modelling, feedback, and activities to support speech development.

Aim of this workshop

  • Develop an understanding of how speech sounds emerge and develop in different ways
  • Recognise how differences in speech clarity can impact children’s communication, learning, and social interaction
  • Learn practical, play-based strategies to support clearer communication at universal and targeted levels
  • Build confidence in identifying when additional support or referral may be helpful.

Entry criteria

You may have completed a speech sound screener and have concerns about a child's speech sound development. This is for children up to Key Stage 1 (KS1).

This workshop is for professionals supporting children who:

  • use sentences to communicate, but it may be hard for others to understand at times
  • use different speech sound patterns (e.g. swapping or omitting certain sounds)
  • can participate in structured, adult-supported activities
