Sail Into Sound Graphic Of Boat Sailing

Sail into Sounds is a speech and language programme for early years education settings. It was made to help educators develop children's speech, language and communication skills. This programme was developed by Bedfordshire and Luton speech and language therapists.

All of the Sail into Sounds activities focus on input skills, rather than producing sounds. The activities will promote embedding speech sounds into children's daily routines. This helps support children with their speech sound development.

Aim of this workshop

  • Feel confident delivering the 'Sail into sounds' programme to children
  • Implement strategies to support language skills at a universal and targeted level
  • Use 'Sail into sounds' to help use speech sounds into children's daily routines

Entry criteria

The workshop will benefit professionals who work with children who:

  • work with children aged 3 to 5 years old
  • work early years school settings such as nursery, preschool or reception

Workshop dates

These workshops are free. Workshops will include a pack of session plans and supporting evidence.

After the first training session, you will be expected to run the Sail into Sounds group in your setting. A speech and language therapist will visit your setting to support you with at least 1 group session. When this has been completed, you will be an accredited Sail into Sounds practitioner.

Please note, once booked onto a meeting there will be a penalty fee for non-attendance.

Speech sounds

Speech sounds are the individual sounds we use to make words. The sounds we make when we speak are made from the voice box (larynx), mouth muscles, jaw, lips, teeth, and tongue. In English we have 46 sounds for 26 letters of the alphabet.
