A workshop to help parents and professionals understand and support their child’s communication profile. The workshop explores how communication develops through interaction, relationships and shared experiences, and how adults can adapt their own communication to support meaningful connections. You will explore practical ways to create communication‑supportive environments and interactions across home and education settings.

We encourage parents, carers and professionals to attend together where possible to build shared understanding and consistent, supportive approaches.

Aim of this workshop

  • Build understanding of the many ways communication can develop and be expressed at all ages
  • Support adults to recognise and respond to each child’s individual communication profile
  • Explore responsive, child‑led strategies that build on strengths and interests
  • Promote consistent, respectful communication approaches across different environments.

Entry criteria

The workshop is for parents/carers or any adults supporting children and young people who:

  • Experience differences in how they engage, attend or respond, depending on context
  • Communicate using a range of approaches, e.g., gestures, sounds, actions, AAC, or emerging speech
  • Will benefit from adults developing a deeper understanding of their communication cues
