Expressive language: Using sentences and stories
- Professionals and Clinicians
- Training and workshops
- Speech, language and communication
This workshop is for professionals only
Children communicate and share experiences in many different ways. Using sentences and stories can support some children to organise and share ideas, recall events, and connect with others in everyday conversation.
We recognise that children may use a range of communication styles (including gestures, visuals, or alternative communication systems), all of which are valid and meaningful.
Aim of this workshop
- Explore different ways children develop and use sentences and storytelling
- Understand how narrative skills can support communication, learning, and connection
- Recognise the impact that differences in using sentences and stories can have on children’s learning and social interaction
- Learn practical strategies to support children in expressing themselves in ways that work for them.
Entry criteria
This workshop is for professionals supporting children who:
- are not yet creating sentences
- communicate about events in ways that may be harder for others to follow
- share either brief or highly detailed information when telling stories
- find it difficult to organise or sequence their ideas clearly
- rely on shared context or assume background knowledge
