Comic strip conversations are a helpful tool to help children and young people. They are a way to show what happens during an event or situation. Comic strip conversations can help children and young people:
- understand their own emotions
- build empathy
- see situations from other people's point of view
- understand abstract concepts
- understand what others are thinking and how it relates to what they say
A comic strip conversation does not need to be a detailed illustration. You can use stick figures or find images online.

Social stories
Social stories are a tool that helps children and young people to understand specific situations, skills or concepts. They use pictures and words to explain a situation from the point of view of the child or young person.
As a tool, social stories can help children and young people:
Social stories don't need to be perfect or neat. You can make them using Word or PowerPoint. You can also physically make them by writing on paper using photographs or drawings for the images.
A social story should:
If appropriate, you can offer a suggestion or coaching statement. This can give your child or young person an idea of what to do or say.
