Speech, language and communication packages of support

What is a package of support?

A package of support is an individualised plan of care.  It's aim is to help the child meet  their identified communication targets. The package may include:

  • Information and guidance on communication tools such as visual supports.
  • Suggest strategies and methods to help the child’s everyday communication.
  • Sessions to show strategies and techniques.
  • Training workshops to learn strategies and techniques for parents and professionals.

Please note, the child’s package of support may not contain all these suggestions. A package of support is to help with the challenges that the individual child is experiencing at that time.

Package of support process

  1. A speech and language referral is submitted to our team. Read more about our referral process.
  2. Once we accept the referral, a speech and language therapist will offer an initial assessment. This will help us to identify any speech, language and communication needs.
  3. The assessment can be in clinic, in school or virtual.
  4. After the assessment, if it is the best option for the child, they will be offered a package of support.
  5. The speech and language therapist will talk with you about the package of support. They will check that you understand the plan and the strategies. They will also help you to find ways to ensure these strategies become part of the child's daily life.

Completing a package of support

The speech and language therapist will assess if a package of support is complete. They will assess if the child has been supported to meet their targets.

Sometimes other needs/strategies may be identified and added to the package of support to allow targets to be met.

Completing a package of support does not mean there is no longer a communication need. It means that the therapist is happy that everything is in place for the child to meet their current target(s).

When this is the case the speech and language therapist will close the package of support. This enables you to continue the work with the child at home and in other environments (nursery /school).

At a later date, the child may need another package of support for the same or a different communication need.
