Language provision
- SEND
- Speech, language and communication
Language provisions are based within selected primary schools. These primary schools have staff trained in speech, language and communication needs. A speech therapist will regularly visit them at school. The language provisions are available for children between reception and year 6.
There are no language provisions beyond year 6 in Bedfordshire and Luton. Language provisions are currently only available in Central Bedfordshire.
Understanding language provision
Children who are placed in a language provision will attend classes with other children. At the school, a teaching assistant will help your child's speech and language day-to-day. Your child will also regularly see a speech and language therapist. The school will have resources and equipment to help your child with their speech and language needs.
There are 2 language provisions in Central Bedfordshire. Places are limited at 8 children per school.
To be considered for a language provision the child must have an education, health and care plan (EHCP). The primary area of need must be a speech and language difficulty or disorder.
Language provisions are not suitable for children whose primary area of need is:
- autism spectrum disorder
- behavioural issues
- hearing impairment
- learning difficulties or cognitive impairment
- social, emotional and mental health (SEMH) needs such as anxiety
