Family Food First

Group of 4 young children sitting round a table eating food from plastic plates.

The Family Food First programme works with early years settings in Luton to promote and reward healthy lifestyle activities.

Introducing Family Food First

Good nutrition when children are young is very important for their growth and development. The eating habits they learn during this time can affect their health later in life, so it’s important they have access to healthy food both at home and in childcare.

Led by experts in public health nutrition, Family Food First helps early years staff gain the knowledge and tools they need to set the foundations for children's lifelong health. The programme uses a whole-setting approach to health and wellbeing, engaging with children, staff, parents, carers and the wider community.

The Family Food First team provides support in areas like:

  • creating health policies
  • nutrition education
  • providing healthy food
  • healthy packed lunches
  • breastfeeding and infant nutrition
  • physical education
  • healthy celebrations
  • promoting good oral health
