Responsive breastfeeding

- Feeding and eating
Responsive breastfeeding is when the breastfeeding parent feeds their baby in response to their feeding cues. There are no limits to how often you can offer your breast. Responsive breastfeeding helps build a relationship with your baby, as it is not just about giving your baby nutrients. Babies will seek to breastfeed for a number of reasons including love, comfort and reassurance.
When to breastfeed your baby
Breastfed babies should be fed between 8 and 12 times in a 24 hour period. Letting your baby feed when they need to will ensure they are getting the milk they need, when they need it. All babies will feed at different times. This is perfectly normal and healthy.
Some of the signals that you should feed your baby:
-
- your baby is showing early hunger cues
- your baby is showing signs of being unwell or upset
- you or your baby are seeking comfort
- your breasts are feeling full
You may want to breastfeed your baby when you are going to be in a situation where you cannot feed them for a little while, such as a short car journey.
Remember, you cannot overfeed or spoil your baby by feeding them in response to their cues.
What is cluster feeding?
Cluster feeding is when your baby wants to feed frequently or sometimes constantly. If your baby is going through a growth spurt they may cluster feed for a few days. Cluster feeding is normal and can occur during the day or night.
